Southeast of Cuba and northwest of Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic occupies two-thirds of Hispaniola, the second-largest island in the Caribbean. The remaining third of Hispaniola is French-speaking Haiti, the Dominican Republic's closest neighbor. Lapped by the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean sea, the country encompasses the fertile Cibao Valley and the looming Cordillera Central mountain chain. The Dominican Republic boasts both the loftiest and lowest points in the Caribbean; its Duarte peak rises to 3,175 meters ( 10,417 feet ), while Lake Enriquillo drops to 44 meters ( 144 feet ) below sea level.
