Sosua Dominican Republic picture galleryBeach town par excellence, Sosua is located on the Dominican Republic's
northern coast. The town is divided into two parts: Sosua El Batey welcomes
tourists with its large hotels, casinos, discotheques, bars and restaurants;
Sosua Los Charamicos, with its motley skyline of corrugated tin-roof shacks,
is Sosua's residential area. Sosua's white-sand beaches, such as Los Charamicos,
are indeed paradisial, omnipresent souvenir hawkers notwithstanding. Sosua
has a faint European flavor, and El Batey's small synagogue serves as
a reminder of the now-dispersed Jewish refugee community established here
in 1940. In the nearby town of Cabarete, world-class windsurfers can be
seen darting across the magnificent bay, and Puerto Plata, with its beaches
and airport, is just down the road.
